Wilfredo Mendez To Defend WBO Minimumweight Title Against Alexis Diaz In December

WBO minimumweight champion Wilfredo Mendez is set to return to the ring before the year is done.

Mendez, Puerto Rico’s sole male world champion, will defend his title against Venezuelan challenger Alexis Diaz. The fight will take place in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and the event will be promoted by Shaun Boxing. The fight will be broadcast on Shaun Boxing’s YouTube channel.

Mendez won the WBO title back in August 2019 when he scored a unanimous decision win over Victorio Saludar in Puerto Rico. Since then, Mendez has defended his title twice with wins over Axel Aragon Vega and Gabriel Mendoza.

Diaz is no stranger to fighting world class boxers at 105 pounds, having faced current WBA champion Thammanoon Niyomtrong and former world champion Jose Argumedo. Diaz, who sports a 25-2 pro record and is ranked No. 15 by the WBO, is coming off a fourth-round win over then-winless fighter Yorvis Ramos back in September 2019. The 33-year-old Diaz has won nine of his last 11 fights dating back to 2015.

During the pandemic, Mendez trained at the Mayweather Boxing Club in Las Vegas, working alongside the likes of world champions Gervonta Davis and Angelo Leo as well as bantamweight titlist John Riel Casimero.

Mendez has been mentored former WBO minimumweight champion Ivan Calderon, who had previously set a goal for Mendez, which is to successfully defend a world title more times than Calderon has.
