Murodjon Akhmadaliev Stops Ryosuke Iwasa In Five, Retains Super Bantamweight Titles In Uzbekistan

With a dance troupe and a band playing covers of Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” the city of Tashkent, Uzbekistan was treated to a boxing and entertainment spectacle, headlined by Murodjon Akhmadaliev’s first pro bout back in his home country.

In his first world title defense and ninth pro bout, Akhmadaliev outboxed and outlanded Ryosuke Iwasa en route to a fifth-round stoppage to keep his WBA and IBF super bantamweight titles. The fight capped off a DAZN broadcast that saw five other boxers from Uzbekistan pick up victories.

Akhmadaliev started applying pressure with the jab and with aggression, pinning Iwasa to the ropes early on. Iwasa struggled to find his rhythm due to Akhmadaliev cutting off the ring, but Iwasa found a way to start landing punches. In round two, Iwasa snuck in a few body shots, but did take a lot of damage from Akhmadaliev’s jab.

Once the third round started, Akhmadaliev unleashed several hard combinations that pushed Iwasa back at times. Every time Iwasa landed a couple of punches, Akhmadaliev responded with many combinations, leading with the jab that Iwasa couldn’t find an answer for.

The start of the fifth round saw Akhmadaliev land several uninterrupted combinations on Iwasa, breaking through his defense and pushing him back. Iwasa didn’t respond well to Akhmadaliev’s early onslaught. After a minute passed in the fifth round, Akhmadaliev landed a pair of uppercuts that led to a barrage of heavy shots that stunned Iwasa. With Iwasa pinned to the ropes getting hit hard by Akhmadaliev, the referee stopped the bout, completing the champion’s first title defense.

This was Akhmadaliev’s first fight in more than 14 months with his last bout taking place in January 2020 after beating Daniel Roman to win the titles. Iwasa won the right to challenge for the IBF title in 2019 with consecutive wins against Cesar Juarez and Marlon Tapales. Iwasa held the IBF title from 2017 to 2018.
